David Kohn is Oxnam Professor of Science and Society, Emeritus at Drew University, Research Associate at the American Museum of Natural History Library, Senior Research Fellow of the Charles Darwin Trust, and Life Member of Clare Hall, Cambridge University. He has been at the center of scholarship concerned with editing and interpreting Charles Darwin's manuscripts for more than a quarter of a century. His experience with these materials began in 1974 when, under the supervision of Dr. Sidney Smith, he assisted in adding final touches to Robert Stauffer's edition of Natural Selection, which is recognized as the first modern rendering of a Darwin scientific manuscript. He subsequently served for five years as the first Cambridge based full-time editor of The Correspondence of Charles Darwin. In that post he shaped much of that prize-winning project's enduring infrastructure-including its archival control, editorial policy, and the digitizing of some 15,000 letters. In 1987 Professor Kohn published Charles Darwin's Notebooks: 1836-1842 in collaboration with Paul Barrett, Peter Gautrey, Sandra Herbert, and Sidney Smith. He was personally responsible for editing the Transmutation Notebooks section of this edition. Since that time he has been transcribing Darwin scientific manuscripts-to the standards of the Darwin Correspondence and Notebooks editions-for the purposes of his own interpretative scholarship on Darwin's intellectual development.
